I will be volunteering at the Justice Conference Friday February 24th from 6:30 am - 9:30 pm, will you be there?

THE JUSTICE CONFERENCE is a two–day annual event to promote dialogue around justice related issues such as human trafficking, slavery, poverty, HIV/AIDS and human rights, featuring internationally acclaimed speakers, hundreds of humanitarian organizations and dozens of pre-conference workshops.

25 and thankful

I turned 25 last week! Yikes! Anamazing journey it has been.

This past year was full of blessing, learning, growing, changing, and forgiving. Friends- old and new and an expanding family.

I have had quite the journey, but I wouldn't change it for the world. I love where I am and what I'm learning.

I am designing full time, volunteering for Shared Hope Intl, involved with a great church community and in love with an incredible God fearing man.

More to come- God is good.

January: A Month in Photos

I'm a woman of few words this month, but here is a look into this past month through the lens of a camera:

I had a headband from my business featured in a local bridal magazine :)

I built a fire with a bunch of my close girlfriends and really took time this month to invest in healthy, life-giving friendships.

I allowed more freedom in my schedule to invest in time with family, especially my little rugrat, she's getting so big!

I spent quality time with my dad and enjoyed honest, open conversations.

I continued my goal of eating raw, healthy, and balanced. Inventing delicious foods and putting my health on my priority list.

Oh, and I signed up for my first half marathon in June. :)

Happy Holidays to all of you!!

Back into my routine and caught up on sleep, I wanted to write a quick post (newsletter update coming soon) to let you all know what I've been up to!

I have been researching trafficking in Portland and meeting with pastors and directors, trying to find my niche in my own community.

I also celebrated my heart anniversary! What is a heart anniversary you ask?! Well, 2 years ago, we all surprisingly discovered that my heart was failing, so the docs had to give me a pacemaker so that my heart would continue beating. My dear wonderful and thoughtful friends (such a blessing) have celebrated this day and have made it an annual tradition to celebrate. I am alive (yay!) but still having complications with my heart. I have other problems with this physical heart of mine(boo!) and continuously frequent my cardiologists. (BUT, they are the BEST in Oregon!). *Begin shameless plus for need of funds to help pay for my heart/ medical costs*

Christmas was spent with my family, both immediate and external and with my man and his family.
RD surprised me with the Nutcracker and an amazing dinner followed by peacock lane and a night with good friends. My parents bought me a gym membership (via doctors advice) so that I can keep my fragile body and heart in the best condition possible. It has been so good to be home, but I do miss my German family and my Father's House family in Ukraine.

Germany Day 3 - Friday

The first half of the day was spent in class with YWAMers, I helped teach on the best ways to aid internationally- equipping a community versus doing it for them as Westerners and what that looks like.

Then I stayed with the YWAMers and hung out with them for the rest of the day. After lunch we played music for about 4 hours, I sang the majority of it but finally picked up the guitar at the end and wasn't ale to put it back down. After a really encouraging time of just hanging out and lifting each other up, we had a delicious dinner together followed by outreach.

I went with their team into downtown Hamburg to do prostitution outreach for several hours last night in the other big redlight district. We had more men with us then women, so it was safe. It was an amazing time, I did the following:

-Talked with(via translator) and prayed over prostitutes, listened to them and their stories.
- Belted out worship songs with one of my new friends from YWAM, she started playing random chords on the guitar while I belted out random verses to sing at the top of my lungs, most of which were from songs I've written these past few days or verses I've read recently. People around join in with rapping (in German) or dancing, or clapping, or just to talk and have coffee. The majority of those who joined were men- probably customers...
After a few seconds of quick disgust, I prayed, danced and sang with them. I wasn't angry with them anymore. One individual (who was clearly drunk) took my hand and we danced the cha cha.

I wish I could express how fruitful these past two weeks have been. These are the weeks that I decided to not follow the "plan" and to step away from Justice ACTs for various reasons. I dedicated these past two weeks to prayer and what God wants me to do, not anyone else. It has been the most fruitful, eye opening, encouraging, and biggest learning experience yet. I was ready to leave Ukraine, but I am not ready to leave Germany...

This will be my lat blog post from Europe, next time you read this blog I will be back in the states, putting into to action what others have shown and what I am called to do in Portland these next couple of months. Thank you for your dedication in reading my blog, thank you for your support and encouragement, know that you made a difference by partnering with me. I prayed you are blessed for that, regardless of what you believe, I am still praying for you.

I have been in Germany for 2 days now and I love it! I could totally live here, it's very similar to the NW. The people are so nice and helpful!

What have I been up to these past few days?

~Visited the Christmas market after a few hours of sharing more of my story and life and what I am doing with my business/ how etc in Portland with the YWAMers.

~Went to one of the biggest red light districts: Reeperbahn. Did prostitution outreach (prostitution is still legal in this particular area of Germany) and met at the salvation army for intercession.

~Sharing how I am involved in several spheres of society, what that means, what it looks like, how to apply it to your life as a mission. Specifically, as a teacher and business owner.

~Giving night, spent a night together with the YWAMers and in that evening we collectively gave over 6,000 Euros to each other to those who needed it to continue with their mission.

The majority of my time has been being relational with the YWAMers, giving advice, sharing my story, talking about life, helping guide and train them. I have more than enjoyed my few days here.

Sunday at Father's House - Day 4?

I took the day to rest (in every literal sense of the word).

I stayed in bed until about 11 am, not really doing anything, napping off and on, thinking about my life this past month. I ate and played with the kids, teaching more english, hung out with the guard dog (everyone is afraid of him because he's HUGE and barks all the time, when in reality he's a big baby who just wants to be pet, so I pet him for awhile) then it was back to my bed. I decided to be adventurous and watch a movie, I picked a rom-com (worst idea ever when you're alone in a foreign country missing everyone you love) I felt so lonely after watching it! haha.

In between bouts of napping (I didn't realize how tired I was!) I have been able to blog, begin processing this past month and start planning/ putting into action everything I've learned. Needless to say I've got a lot to do when I get back to Portland! BUT I have promised several people that I will actually rest before my next adventures begin. I get back the first week of December, have a few meetings and business items to take care of, and then I will be taking a couple weeks for family and friends (oh, and Christmas!!). Come January, Jade will be back in the saddle! (weird reference....)

I'm excited to share with all of you the projects I will be working, the people I will be working with and the places I will be going. I'm also trying to figure out the best way to share with all of you the things I have learned!! It will be quite some time before everything is fully processed and understood, this i know, but I do plan to continue my blogging as I share my thoughts and story. Thank you again for following me on this journey of life, I know that somewhere out there in cyber world, in front of a computer screen, I have faithful readers. I hope I have kept you entertained and informed. Maybe one day you will be reading my words bound in print... (hey, a girl can dream!)

It was (full) day 3 at the orphanage on Saturday and it was an exciting one!

The American Embassy came over with a Thanksgiving me for the orphans (myself included)! They had specific items shipped over from the states in order to make a real Thanksgiving feast. Some of the embassy wives had pumpkin shipped over for homemade pumpkin pie!
I obviously missed all of my loved ones back home during this Holiday, but this will probably be one of the most memorable Thanksgivings. The kids loved all of the food, games, and activities. There were about 25 people who came from the embassy. Some included military personnel, a guy from the FBI, an economist etc. I felt very protected in that place. They brought with them balloons, stickers, candy, i pads (just for temporary play), cameras, smart phones etc and the kids had a field day! One of the best moments outside of feasting was the balloon fight. The kids went crazy for a brief moment!

Funny Faces

It was incredibly inspiring to talk with everyone from the embassy (and homey, for a brief moment I could have been in America) and to speak to their kids and families about what they do, how they do it and why. For those who don't know, once upon a time an eager 19 year old jade Rose started learning Arabic in hopes of going into the FBI (and "saving" my brother if need be who was overseas at the time in the Marines). The dream was quickly shattered when my medical stuff started happening etc. So I gave up on that dream (one of only a handful I've decided to walk away from). BUT, I was encouraged by what everyone had to say, even if I don't join the FBI (I'm a really good shoot... they'd be missing out) there is so much international/ governmental work that still needs to be done and can still be done (all while having a family!). One of them men (Army) was from Salem! He was hilarious, he had lots of information to share and said out of the 22 countries he's been in with orphanages, this particular orphanage I'm staying at is the best he's ever seen. He said it should be the model that everyone follows. I agree!

I am glad i randomly volunteered because I'm learning a lot in regards to a positive and successful organization, what that looks like, how it functions and the type of people you need to help it run successfully. On top of that I am getting to love on kids who need it most.

So, back to my original thoughts- This Thanksgiving was the best yet. I am so thankful I get the opportunity to be here, I am so thankful for everyone in the states who have partnered with me on this journey, I am thankful for the support and encouragement I get from all of you, I am thankful I even have readers of this blog, and I am thankful that I have been blessed so that I may bless others. Thank you for all that you've done in helping me accomplish this work out here in Europe. I pray for all of you everyday, and in one week I get to see some of you!

Father's House Day 2

This post comes a day late due to lack of internet.

Day 2 was filled with lots of running around, literally. I played mom for several hours to brothers Stasic and Danik. My mom hat was on as I fed, taught, cleaned, entertained, and chased these two around. Not to mention protect them from the attack of "The Crazy Orphan Chihuahua!"

The second half of the day was spent on Art Therapy. I thought- ok, art therapy....hmmm, what would make these 10 year olds happy?
Then I spotted it, GLITTER! I cut out petals from neon colored felt and taught the kids how to make flower brooches (complete with glitter of course)! They LOVED it, by the end of the night we all had glitter on our hair, noses, cheeks and lips! Too much fun. You can find more pictures here!

Happy Thanksgiving friends and family!!!

I will be celebrating with the orphanage on Saturday when 24 members from the American Embassy come out and share the Thanksgiving spirit! I am looking forward to being surrounded by so many people from the states.

My time here has been filled with paint, TESOL, and rowdy boys. Tomorrow the girls and I will be making hair accessories (think glittery, simple flowers) while the boys make something boyish... yep, I haven't planned that yet.

***I just got back from hanging out with 3 boys (5,7,13) who will be in my English class tomorrow, it took a mere 30 seconds before they were attacking me with hugs. There's just so much joy to be found in a little boy running up to you with his arms open wide. (I made the mistake of picking him up, for the next hour I was giving piggy back rides, making human footballs, and lifting them off of high dangerous places).

I've always known that someday I want to have at least one girl, but boys are SO FUN and CRAZY. Now I know for sure I want at least one boy as well. I love it. Forget about pregnancy weight, having a boy is your work out!

We were invited by the ladies of A21 to join them at Hillsong. A church that is known for their amazingly talented worship. It was such a great experience and very much reminded me of my home church. They happened to have a guest speaker today from Texas (Joe Champion) so we didn't need a translator! Mariana (my roommate) and I enjoyed the service and then lunch afterwards with the team from A21 and then an afternoon of fellowship and fun, what a great Sunday!! Then there was the adult disability orphanage. First we saw the bed ridden ones, it smelled awful. I hand fed chocolate to a guy in his twenties, as I was putting it in his mouth a fly flew out from under his blanket and landed on my hand, he sat up slightly and had dirt, sores, and black stuff on his skin. He had to be hand fed because he was so drugged. He would sing, He liked to sing every night but they decided to drug him because of it and so he was bed ridden and laying there drugged all the time. Another man I gave chocolate to had gang green on his feet, he tried hiding it, another on his head. HIS HEAD, And another man was sitting on the floor with legs that didnt function, so I sat down next to him. He was smiling even though he couldnt talk and kept pointing to a sketch he had hanging on his wall. Then he pointed to his heart, I realized it was Jesus. I was able to talk about Jesus with him, the language barrier out of the way. I quickly remembered every Russian word I had learned while in the orphanage and could hold half sentenced convos with the residents. In another wing I was able to pray for a man named Sasha who held my hand the entire time, he kept asking to be prayed over. He was probably in is late 40's, he didnt want to let go of my hand, he would always try to hold it if I were feeding someone else. I fed others chocolates and bananas, they smelled of urine. Oh the smell of the entire building. and they were joyful, just as the orphans in Haiti were, they were joyful. Our friend Max who visits their program routinely said some of them pray in spirit. They know Jesus and understand him in a way I may never understand.

So many stray dogs with no one to love them. It's been in the 30's. They all walk around with their tail between their legs, scared. They don't like dogs here, they burn the dogs after they catch them.

I talk to the dogs and pet them (with gloves on that are then washed, mom). I feed them when I can. They sleep on cardboard in the metro station to try and stay warm. They get so excited and follow me around, the poor things just need love. Here's one of them below. Makes me really miss my dog, Cirrus.

Salvation Army Conference

One of our helpful contacts out here in Ukraine has been the Salvation Army. They are having a conference this weekend in Ukraine and Poland on anti-trafficking. Since we happen to be in Ukraine, guess who was asked to speak at the conference?!

Yep.

Kimberly (director of JA Intl) is speaking on Anti-Trafficking. Mariana (South America Coordinator) is speaking to our success stories and I (yeah, surprise!) am speaking on prayer.

Oh, did I mention it's tomorrow morning?!

I'm excited but feeling totally unprepared, how do I teach on prayer... to my elders? Isn't that a pastors job?! Keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I speak on this tomorrow. Luckily I have 23 years of experience praying and happen to have always had a great prayer life. I guess it's a good topic for me? Yeah, let's stay positive... :)

We have made so many contacts since being in Ukraine, contacts that we have made since being here have been the most informative yet.

One contact was the director of Father's House, a more than fantastic orphanage/ rehab center. After speaking with her, I was able to schedule a time for our team to visit the house. Not only was I blown away by how much they have accomplished in ten years but their program is so extensive and effective that they have the Ukrainian government sending them orphans. (That is a big deal).

This is an organization that would be a reason for me to come back to Ukraine (and that takes a lot, this place can be super depressing), being there was confirmation that I'm to work with children, orphans, in one way or another. (Oh, did I not tell you?! That was a revelation/ God reminding me AGAIN that I'm to work with children and specifically orphans). Anyway....

Sabbath

This morning started our Sabbath out here in Ukraine. My dad emailed me and told me to Read Isaiah 40:31, not knowing what I was feeling emotionally or anything. But he somehow always knows what's best.

"I know because I'm dad..." that was good enough for me as a kid and it's good enough for me now. That prompted the reading of all of Isaiah 40.

Probably the most comforting scripture I've read since being in Ukraine. My strength can be renewed because of my hope in the Lord. That's all I need. No use feeling lonely, sad, angry, depressed, or like my body is failing. It's not my strength I'm supposed to thrive on anyway.

Just some thoughts from ukraine.... I walk by this monastery daily.

The Orphan

I was raised in a family of 5 children with lots of cousins, aunts, and uncles.
I always had dolls and stuffed animals I played house with.
I grew up with pets and loving on animals.
I started my first "real job" working int he church nursery at the age of 12.
I babysat from time to time in high school and eventually landed a job at 19 working with special needs children.
At 21 I was hired permanently working full time in an elementary aged behavior classroom.
I love kids. I love babies.
I always dreamed of the family I'd have when I was older, I still do.
I've always wanted to adopt, giving the chance at a good life to a less fortunate child.
but I wasn't prepared for my senior year of high school when my doctor would tell me that I would be unable to have kids.
She explained the complications of 2 different medical problems I had that inhibited the growth of a child.
With little hesitancy, I went ahead with a questionable surgery that is still be researched today.

My chances of birthing a child have successfully increased to 50%. Not bad when you're initially told zero...

Except I struggle with that 50% that could mean I would have a child. I struggle with the decision of whether or not it's wise to try. I'm risking my own life and potentially creating a human being that will have just as many medical problems as I- or more.

Now, I realize I'm not married and children are still a few years away, but Ukraine has re-opened my eyes to that love I have always had for the orphan. As my bird tattoo symbolizes, I still have so much love to give, regardless of how broken my heart has been at times (no pun intended).

My "calling" in life is for the orphan. The unloved and unwanted. My calling is to be a mother, in whatever form that takes. And to just love.

Week 2 in Ukraine begins!

Today wrapped up our first official day of filming! All of the long days leading up to this have been worth it. We had 2 fantastic interviews with individuals who are the director of non profits working with both orphans in Ukraine and fighting sex trafficking/ prostitution.

One of these great contacts came from our networking yesterday-
Sunday morning we went to the only international church in Kiev. It was refreshing to be surrounded by native English speakers. It was a very much needed break. The service was dedicated to the orphan and more specifically the orphan in Ukraine. We networked and made a ton of contacts. The main speaker was who we interviewed today. I got a little emotional as he spoke but knew that this is exactly the information we need to share. The problem and the hope through these organizations that orphans have. His success stories were even more tear jerking but encouraging all at the same time. The Sunday church service was really eye opening, at one point the congregation was asked to raise their hand if they had ever been an orphan, I would say at least 2/3 raised there hands. I was shocked. The good news? they were able to speak to our team about hope and chances at a normal loving life through adoption and through people like those we met yesterday.
If you know me, you know I love kids. On top of that, most of you know that I have always had a heart to adopt, circumstances might make that my only option and I am even more joyful and content with that option then ever before.

We had a very eventful Sunday and Monday, we had our staff meeting 12 hours ago and are just now settling down for another meeting soon. We keep forgetting to eat, it takes our 6'7 videographer to remind us sometimes :)

Tuesday (tomorrow) we have a packed day. Starting with some street outreach work serving a local ministry, then a sit down interview I'm conducting with a couple who runs a youth organization focusing on abuse and addiction, and then a dinner meeting with a lady who has been a huge blessing here in Ukraine. She is from the states and works with an orphan organization and has given us more help then we could ever ask for.

The rest of the week is quite exciting, lots of work, and may or may not involve me teaching on prayer at a national conference put on by The Salvation Army. (yikes!) More on that later!

Thank you again for your support and encouragement as I learn, teach, work, watch, and absorb all that I can. I hope to be encouraging to you, and even if you can't go abroad, your support and encouragement gives me the tools to partner together in fighting the injustices around the globe.

Letters from home...

With tears of joy in my eyes and lots of laughter, I have been reading through letters of encouragement and love from my house church family. The second half of our team arrived yesterday (yay!) Along with them came 10 letters from some of my favorite people ever. They split the letters for each week that I'm here! How incredibly thoughtful, loving, and exactly what I needed!

I got to first enjoy encouraging scripture and words of wisdom from my very talented and very beautiful friend Jenny Jen, who always speaks wisdom into my life.

Then I opened Week 1 Part A... followed by Week 1 Part B (It's Friday, it counts as part B!) and was brought to tears and laughter as I read the letters from Jeff Ratzlaff, he knows me too well. Speaking to my character and praying over me in the letter was what I needed to "hear".

I cannot wait to read the rest of the letters, such a comfort here to have that. It seems so simple, but it's very impressionable and is one more push to keep me going!
So to my amazing friends with who, I love so, so, so much! Thank you!

I cannot wait to see you and tell you all of my ridiculous stories! Like getting in trouble by a Babushka.... :) I miss you and I'm praying for you!!

Mystical Kyiv

Our accommodations are at a local Baptist Church, they don't have internet.
So... since I now know the city pretty well, or at least the main streets, I was able to walk to a coffee shop just now (by myself!) and feel safe and aware of my surroundings. (I was able to lead the entire team through out Kiev and safely back to our place, yay!) It's a good comforting feeling, the russian i do know is basic enough to get me help if I needed it, so don't worry mom and dad, I'm safe.

Anyways, the point of this post was just to tell you that Ukraine is beautiful and mysterious in the mornings (your midnight). A heavy dew and fog is resting on the streets, a local church is playing their choir through speakers from their building and the streets are without cars with just stray dogs and myself walking around. It's peaceful. Mysterious, intriguing, but peaceful.

Day 3 - Lost in Translation

Literally.

Guess what we did for hours and hours today?! Walked all of Kiev with all of our luggage. :) Not only did we get lost, but we made the term tourist even more obnoxious. We looked ridiculous, each with a huge backpack and a suitcase, a map, a laptop out trying to get wifi (I'm actually writing this while lost on a corner of kiev waiting for Kimberly and Oli to return with good news that they know where we are - see pic below, yep.) and asking for anyone who could speak English.

It's been four hours now... it was supposed to be a 20 minute walk. Worse part?

Ukrainians were taking a picture of me standing with all of our luggage on the corner... yep, I'm one of those Americans abroad. Great.

EDIT: 45 minutes after writing this we found it! It's the best hostel yet and its cheaper. They have an American working here which helps a ton, the rooms are bigger, its cleaner and they have family guy posters everywhere. It was worth getting lost :)

Good morning! Well, my morning - your evening.

Kimberly, Oliver and I arrived safely yesterday. We had a few hiccups with transportation (and our lack of speaking Russian) but we made it to a hostel for the night. We were so exhausted yesterday that all we could do was go get food and then come back to the hostel and crash, but I managed to grab a few photos for your viewing pleasure! A lot on today's agenda for getting settled in, more familiar with the city, in communication with our contacts and finding different housing. I hope all is well in the US! I'm doing well in regards to feeling refreshed, I don't feel any culture shock. The food is interesting, not bad. The people I've met so far are very nice and helpful considering I sound like a blubbering idiot when I try to explain what I need in broken down English so they can try to understand.

only when it rains

when it rains, it pours.

That is when I reach out the most to Go. My God always has a reason and an answer, I usually can't understand the why to his answer but it is there. He always brings me out of the rain, places me under shelter or even into sunshine.

But when in that sunshine, I begin to shy away from reaching. I'm thankful but I'm also content. Why is it that I don't reach the same in the sunshine as I do in the rain? Wouldn't I be fulfilled that much more? Would everything seem that much brighter?

I always thought being content with where God had me was good, I thought it was a positive thing to strive for. It's better then wanting to be somewhere I am not, right? Well, I have found that with my contentment I become comfortable. A little too comfortable. Then it rains again and I'm shocked and emotionally unprepared and reach out.

I know everyone at some point gets caught in this cycle. I want to encourage you to keep reaching, daily. Reach out. Not to food, alcohol, or other humans, but reach out to God. And maybe next time it will feel like it's just sprinkling, not pouring.

One Week and counting!

In exactly one week I will be leaving for my first international leg with Justice ACTs International.

The first 3 weeks of this trip will be working on a documentary to capture the reality of the unregistered street children in Kiev, Ukraine.

The last week in November will be working with our South American team (in Europe) to start praying/strategizing for the next world cup and our contacts there.

The first week of December will be spent in Germany where we're working closely with YWAM Hamburg and teaching at a Disciple Training School.

Then back home December 5th!

Who Am I?

Let me tell you.

My name is Jade Rose Evelyn McArthur.
I am 24 years old.
I live with my parents.
I just sold my car.
I have $15,000 in student loans without a degree.
I have medical debt that accrues every month with each new doctors visit.
I have a pacemaker that physically keeps me alive.
I take too many meds that keep my heart from beating too fast, prevent stroke, and keep my pituitary tumor at bay.
I suffer from chronic daily pain due to my pacemaker surgery and scoliosis. It makes me so exhausted emotionally and physically that at times I just want to quit. I want to quit being sick, quit being in pain and quit being a scientific experiment.
I am considered a "high risk patient".
I am part of a governmental study that pays for me to have a personal nurse, her name is Susan. She calls weekly.
I have experiences that many people judge harshly. Before they know me.
I have had cancer removed my body twice now.
At 18 I was told I couldn't have children, now my chances are 50/ 50.

Depressing? Sure, if you focus on the above.

However.

I am just 24 years young, with a promising life ahead of me.
I have no rent to pay so I can save for mission work.
I have no auto loan or auto insurance to pay and I have a bike.
I have friendships from that year at University that I wouldn't trade for the $15,000.
I have the best doctors in the world, they saved my life. multiple times.
I have a pacemaker that physically keeps me alive!
I have meds that are working and have brought my atrial fibrillation down by 20%!
I want to quit from the pain, but I don't. I choose to trudge through and move forward, and every time I feel so much stronger. It makes the pain easier.
I am considered a high risk patient... that's just cool!
I get a free personal nurse, thanks USA!
I learned to see myself the way God sees me, when I am judged by humans, I look up, I am reminded of who I am in Christ and why I went through the experiences I did.
I don't have cancer! I've cruised by twice now!
I will have kids, whether I adopt or give birth, it's a possibility! 50/50!

I "came out of the flames reborn" as my good friend Erin Wenzel said.
I was created for something big. (I know everyone says that, but really, I've known since I was a kid)
My story these past 24 years is one of pain and sadness but of hope and restoration.
My story exudes grace.
As it builds in strength and character I look forward to sharing it with you, my audience. Whoever you are.

You Inspire Me

There are a few three worded statements that can change a persons life.
For most people it's I Love You.
Today, for me? It's "you inspire me"

In the past 2 days, 3 different people have told me that I was an inspiration. Typing it out makes the phrase seem so simple, like there's not much to it. But hearing the words "you inspire me" come from a respected friend (even a stranger!) is life changing for me. Mind altering. It puts into perspective how far I've come, and all that I've accomplished. I stop and think- Every mountain I've climbed over and mud pit I've crawled through was worth it.

Without even recognizing it, these past few years have been preparation for my next chapter of life. Years of medical problems, emotional roller coasters, character building relationships, give and take circumstances, and looking death in the face has been one test after the other. And after every heart wrenching, total life changing event I had a choice.

I could choose to take what my parents and the Bible had taught me and climb out of the muck, keep going, head held high and with more strength than before. Or I could be angry, blame the world, blame God, blame myself, and hate those who were happy and "had it together". I could have given up.

And then I was gently reminded- You are worth it. You are a daughter of God. You have been created for a purpose. You have passed the tests, you have succeeded. You have chosen Him again and again, time after time, never doubting His purpose. You have won.

My inspiration comes from my maker. My love for people comes from His love for His people. My desire to seek justice is after His own heart. I'm inspired by Him.

So when I hear people say "Jade, you inspire me". I know that what they see is not just me, but Christ in me.

DELTA Ministries and Jade Rose unite!

DELTA is a fantastic local organization that will be my contact as I work abroad this next year. They are the organization sending me out. I am going on behalf of DELTA, but will be volunteering for Justice ACTs.
All donations to support my volunteering abroad for this next year can be sent to DELTA ministries for tax write offs! I am still in Idaho at the moment, but once I return, I can get the donation information for you!

DELTA will also be in charge of and providing my insurance and emergency evacuation insurance. This will cost $3/ day. I will be working with them to create budgets for when I'm abroad and at home. Well delightful readers, I am finally alive and kicking in the blog world again. So, here we go!

Justice ACTs International- Brief recap! This is the organization I have teamed up with in volunteering to fight human trafficking for the next year. I have only committed a year thus far. We initially had a project in Uganda that was supposed to be happening as I type, but due to unforeseen circumstances that work project has been postponed. Africa is being looked at for next Fall.

So where does the money go that I fund raised for the Africa project that has been postponed? It goes straight to the upcoming project in Eastern Europe. I will be buying the tickets this weekend! I will be in Eastern Europe from October 22nd - December 4th. I will blog during this time as I get internet, so you can keep up to date and follow my experiences right here!

Projects while in Eastern Europe:
- Open a Justice ACTs branch (1 week)
- Create documentary in Ukraine highlighting the 75,000 plus street children being trafficked and in the most vulnerable state for trafficking, conducting interviews etc (With prep/ interviews ~4 weeks)
- Teaching in Hamburg, Germany for a week

A Life of Prayer

I have always had a strong prayer life, it has always been easy for me to just talk to God. To present everything to Him. Knowing communication is a huge part in any relationship, I try to work on it every day. God is usually pretty quick to communicate with me and answer prayers, whether or not I like the response. What I have learned over the past couple of years is that I can't just ignore the bad stuff I don't want to hear and pretend like it's not there. I can't only listen to the answers I want and set aside the answer I don't want. I have to take it all in. I guess you could say I have been known to be a selective listener, only hearing what I want to hear. Yeah, not healthy!

But over this past year and a half I have faced that problem head on and changed it, it was really difficult. It was incredibly difficult to accept the answers I didn't want and to move on. It was painful, life changing, and over all life altering. I stopped ignoring the things God kept shoving my way that I was too afraid to face. I was too weak. I stopped ignoring and on July 5, 2010 I took a drive through the hills of Newberg with my puppy dog Cirrus and snapped this photo on my phone. Little did I know that my conversation with God on this day would change my life entirely. This photo represents beauty and surrender. With tears, humility, and a craving for His presence, I surrendered everything. Sure I have done that before many a time, but this was complete and total surrender. I gave Him my heart, mind, spirit, emotions, fears, weaknesses, health, life, everything.

In return, God has given me peace, life giving friends, a community of God loving people who have seen me break, fall apart, and be put back together again. He has shown His love and grace, paving my way to be his hands and feet. He is opened many doors and closed the ones that although they would be great, are not the perfect ones for me to walk through. He has brought a god loving man into my life to be a leader and has surrounded me with a family who loves no matter what.

I have learned the importance of listening, even when I don't want to hear what He has to say. Sometimes it feels like I've been waiting and waiting, but then he teaches me patience. I am constantly learning, he is constantly teaching. I am doing my best to not get distracted by worldly things that will keep me from hearing and seeing what He has for me.

I encourage you to stop and listen. Truly listen. Pray the distractions are taken away, grab your Bible and just start reading. Anywhere. He will speak to you. It takes patience sometimes, it's not always as blunt and obvious as it was on July 5th for me. But He will speak to you! He created us to be communal, relational being, in His image. So I know he loves to talk as well :)

What I've been learning...

I've definitely been inventing letters over these past couple weeks. Faith, trust, and yoga are what I'm surviving on. I have been learning quite a bit lately. As an American, I have been cultured to think and thrive on having my life/ day at the very least planned out. I have my "life" (calendar) in my smart phone, events on facebook, planners and email reminders of what I'm doing/ who I'm meeting with and when I am supposed to be somewhere. well, reality check Jade Rose!! The rest of the world doesn't function that way! Especially Africa! After a couple days of adjusting, I accepted the way of African (translation: no time line).

Let me explain:
I was supposed to leave August 6th for Mozambique where I would be working with a ministry out there to build up a prostitution outreach. This may or may not happen. It's still up in the air, I may be purchasing tickets two days before, and that's ok. I don't need to buy them WAY in advance like we are conditioned to think. (As a side note - tickets are getting cheaper the closer we get to that day, who knew? I thought they would get more expensive!). Anyway, my point is that it's completely ok that I have nothing figured out in regards to Africa and I might be leaving for it in 2 weeks.

So what is the benefit show for if not to raise money for that specific trip? Many of you have asked... Well my friends, the benefit show is to bring awareness to my work and what I will be doing/ who I will be doing it with. It's focus is also to help fund my work, both with one time gifts and monthly support. Some are called to help abroad, others not. I was called to help abroad, you can still take part in helping the lives of the trafficked by helping me! I am also "scheduled" to leave in October for Eastern Europe where demanding work will really be had. Without getting into too many details too early, the majority of the time (several weeks) will be spent in Kiev, Ukraine trying to save the 75, 000 unregistered children that are living on the streets and in the sewers. The highest/ most at risk population for human trafficking. Funds are also be saved to go toward my work there.

I am stressed, but excited. Nervous and intimidated but humbled by the opportunity. Thank you for bearing with me and supporting me. The encouragement being poured out from friends, family, and my readers is helping push me through what will be one of the most demanding years of my life. I'm excited about this journey, are you?!

BTW- The t-shirts I made for JA Intl funds are in!!! They will be on the online store soon, I am not quite done with it yet! What do you think?!

My pondering mind...

I was encouraged by a friend's openness today, her willingness to put her thoughts and raw feelings out into the blogging world. Completely encouraged and excited for her new adventures, I thought I'd give it a try.

For starters, I have a very wide range of readers in the audience. Past co-workers, life long friends, "new chapter of life" friends, family, past students, friends of friends, JA Intl supporters etc. Knowing that I have a mixed audience is what makes this blog intimidating at times. It can prevent me from truly expelling my thoughts and feelings.
But life is short, and one thing I want to accomplish in life is telling my story. I know I have only lived a short 24 years, but there is already SO much packed in there, so much to learn from and be encouraged by. I want this blog to be an outlet to that desire. I want you, the reader, to really get to know me. The real Jade Rose...

501c3: Does anyone know if our business registry number is the same as a non profit number? We are registered as a non profit in the state of Oregon, but the only number they gave me was our "registry" number. I'm new to all of this...

Kenna designed this for us and did a great job! We are super excited! Justice ACTs is recognized as a non profit in South Africa, not in the states. Justice ACTs International is a branch off from Justice ACTs. We're official!!

My pituitary tumor has decreased in size! The meds have been working correctly and actually shrinking my tumor! Here is my chimpanzee looking head from my CT Scan the other day, because of my pacemaker I can't have MRI's. A great day to celebrate. Vegan avocado cupcakes anyone?! :)

Midnight ramblings...

It's midnight here in Portland and officially summer! I am waiting for my pumpkin bread to bake, nothing like a midnight bake session! I am still recovering from my first sunburn of the season, I definitely have a ton of new freckles. Great prep for Uganda.

I am still preparing to leave for Uganda around August 16th. I am in need of financial support and prayer! My current need is monthly support starting in August. This has been an interesting transition for me. My faith and trust in God has definitely already been tested, to go from the financial security of a steady paycheck to that of a missionary where my "financial security" is dependent on others has been nerve wracking. With that said, I am kind of enjoying being poor and living frugally. It really pushes my creative envelope. (The other day I made a jewelry holder out of an old picture frame I found in the house and extra wrapping paper) Who needs to buy these things when you can make them yourself!!

Current focus #2: I am working on a project that is in the very early stages of Justice ACTs Intl. involvement. It will be a big project in cooperation with one of Portland's larger Christian churches. Mum's the word until details can begin to finalize :) Just pray over November for Justice ACTs International!

BTW! An easy way to help support my efforts and enjoy a good evening of local music will be to join me and a group of hand picked talented musicians on July 28th at Mississippi Pizza at 9 PM! Save the date!!

Perfect Day

Yesterday? Perfect.

I will keep it simple and just list yesterday's awesomeness in chronological order:

- Hang out with my parents and dance to Fitz and the Tantrums - Money Grabber
- Catch up on emails
- 82nd street Value Village
- THEN... Wine Tasting!!!
Ryan and I went wine tasting at a vineyard in Dundee. The weather was perfectly sunny with a slight breeze and lots of birds chirping. We tried 7 or 8 different wines complimented by delicious food and chocolate. We walked through the vineyard wine in hand and eventually came across some friendly horses. Gorgeous view of Newberg/ Dundee and the hills. We had a dog follow us for awhile and even "clean up" our plate of food we left under our personal gazebo. (We took a few Polaroids which I will attempt to get on my computer via cell phone picture)
- "Ham night" with new friends (ate delicious Guinness and brown sugar ham)
- Telephone pictionary (most hilarious and awkward game EVER)
- Midnight view of Portland skyline and the stars from Vancouver
- Met up with Sean for an after midnight walk through colonial east Portland and delicious sorbet

Most productive yet relaxing day. It was perfect.

Noah and the Whale

Soooo, yesterday at the Ace, I was too distracted by it's awesomeness and interesting people that I decided to head over to the Doug Fir for their happy hour and free wifi.

I walk in the door only to be greeted by a dapper young fellow in a modern skinny suit with an English accent and amazing hair. The lad happened to be the lead singer of band Noah and the Whale which happened to be playing in a few hours!!
WHAAAAAT. (I know)

NATW history: I fell in love with Noah and the Whale after hearing this song on a sunny drive through the city.

"I WANT TO GO SO BAD!!!" says Jade Rose.

"One minute...." Simon says(!).

(2 minutes later.... liar)

"Ok, you're in"

"What?"

"You're on the list?"

"What list?"

"The list!"

"What does that mean?!"

"Really?"

"WAIT, you mean..."

"Yep, I know. I'm an awesome friend"

"Awwwwwww!!! YAY! I feel so cool now..."

Simon put me on the special VIP list, I gave my name, got a stamp and I was in! Quick side note, before the show started, I spent a good 4 hours writing and researching and actually working for JA. So it wasn't a complete bust in being a productive Sunday. Thank you Simon for being a cool friend!

Blogging from the Ace Hotel {again}

Any given weekend you will find me in here writing, reading, people watching, sipping on delicious (decaf) Stumptown coffee and wishing I was a resident. When it comes time to write my book(s) you better believe I will be sitting upstairs with my journals and notes sprawled out across the grungy, army green wall stretched couch/ bunker or in the quaint chair in the corner with the lamp that hovers over your shoulder too bright and giving you what feels like a sunburn. So lovely. So Portland.

Oh, exciting item came in the mail today! An instant film camera! it's huge, and I mean HUGE! I have to use two hands to hold it, it feels silly... Here is a lovely Polaroid from the Ace, not taken by me, I wish... but isn't it lovely? This is the wall in room 401, COVERED in polaroids, fantastic!!! I plan on making some fun polaroid garlands for my room, give me a month or so to take some good polaroids and I will post about the awesome craft project then :)

Those of you who are friends with me on facebook have seen posts from time to time about my desire to write a book. Specifically, an autobiography. Well, I have taken some steps these past few days to get me started!

I will start with a travel book/ memoir (of which I am super excited about!!!).

I have multiple journals that are only a quarter filled documenting random events in my life. I have specifically assigned journals to specific things, even as specific as a country. Eventually, all of these entries will be combined, heavily edited, and made into a book!

Oh, and check out my amazing new typewriter I bought a few weekends ago at Monti's antique mall!! It was on clearance and super cheap hiding in the smallest corner, peeking out from under a map :) Look at how pretty it is!!

Decaf

Wah wah. Pretty lame. I do not drink coffee for the taste, I drink it for the caffeine. So when I ordered my tall, decaf, no whip, rice mocha I was disappointed. Sure, it tastes like any other rice mocha I usually order, but just knowing their wasn't caffeine in it made it... well, dull. It took me 30 mins to drink a third of it. Epic coffee fail. haha.

Any who... I had a large positive response to my last post. Which is funny because I thought it would be negative or all about my poor grammar. And now that I have a great teacher Brynna reading this, I feel more pressure!! (She's a fantastic writer and has her masters in English... don't judge me, Brynna!!) As I was saying, the response encouraged me to keep writing and keeping ya'll updated on life. Yep, I used ya'll. It's ok, I'm wearing a cowboy shirt right now.

So, this blog will be your "go to" place as I travel the world, feel free to live vicariously through my travels, I won't judge you. I do it all the time with other blogs, if only they knew how creepy I was... ha, kidding. kind of.

LOVING Powells right now, I mean, I always love Powells, but at this moment I LOVE Powells. See the difference? I can research countries and laws in the multitude of books offered, I can have my "coffee" and cookie while working on the computer downstairs, and I can people watch (my favorite past time activity) all of Portland as they walk by the giant windows and act ridiculous. If only you could see the hipster meets 80's gangster next to me... I would post a picture, but then I would truly be a creepy person.

So, I am in the process of planning the Benefit show, it's going to be on June 10th, so mark your calendars! I have a fantastic circle of friends and artists who are going to be helping out, I am super excited about this and a lot of work is going into this event. So much work, that I am getting help from the lovely Stefanie Holmes. The event started as an acoustic show... now there will be multiple artists, "live" art, photography etc. SO STOKED. Location in Portland will be finalized this week, all ages welcome!

Time to send a multitude of emails for Justice ACTs!

Le Picture... I got many stares for this one... I am smack dab in the middle of World Cup Coffee in Powells. Which is a very large room completely surrounded by windows to downtown Portland and packed full of people. I hope ya'll(!) appreciate my dedication to a "picture a post". I look like a fool! (Mr. T would pity me...)

Anyone? Mr. T? I pity the fool! no? ok...

Oh, and to "sum up" my writing, I do not like decaf. That's the moral of my post. :)

A Fib

Soo... you know all of that coffee I had been drinking during the last post?!
Welll, it caused my heart to go into A fib 5 different times the next morning!! I take meds for A fib already because of the heart failure I had before my pacemaker was put in, so it's nothing new (but it shouldn't happen that many times.. in one day... especially when I am already on meds to keep my heart rate down and it still races) Between the caffeine and lack of sleep my poor little heart couldn't take it! I'm fine... but I need other vices for energy that do not involve caffeine. Which is where YOU, the reader, can help! Suggestions?!

I apologize for the lack of posting. I would also like to apologize in advance for my "style" of writing... I write the way I talk, which is incorrect and difficult to read at times. So, I'm sorry... :)

BIG change #1:
I will not be heading to Uganda in June with uKids, I will instead be heading out in the fall to Uganda with Justice ACTs.

BIG change #2: I am officially entering my role as part of the international team for Justice ACTs. Meaning, starting this coming fall I will be a missionary focusing on bringing justice to the orphans and women around the world. Preventing and protecting them from trafficking.

The busy work of research has begun! As I sit in the coffee shop half way through my all-nighter, dreading working at 7:30 this morning I can't help but feel a mix of emotions while I research. First, it is difficult in general to find the information I need when I am on the other side of the world, the internet can only tell you so much. Second, I need to hone my google searching skills :)

My POINT in writing this here entry is to try and express my feelings for what lies ahead. I feel angry and sad for what is being done around the world, it makes me want to hop on a plane now and start working! At the same time, my anticipation is paired with feeling anxious and nervous. I'm feeling excited though...my journey will be one of huge growth, I'm excited I will get to share it with you.

(Also, I love to use ellipses, sometimes in the most incorrect places... it happens)

I am currently editing a manual on international prostitution, I have spent the last 30 minutes re-reading page 3... of 40 pages. Woooo, I love it. Oh, and it's 2 in the morning... I have already worked 8 hours today at the school and have to be ready to teach the kiddos at 7:30 again :) Bring me another coffee, sir! Let's do this!

(most random post. ever... my mind is everywhere... I don't know if it makes any sense... and I have had way too much caffeine...)

Bowl-A-Thon

The bowl-a-thon for Uganda was a big success yesterday! We were able to raise over $7,000 among the group! I bowled a 109, and my team won an award for best costume :). We were the teenage mutant ninja turtles! I wanted to send out a thank you for everyone's encouragement and support!

Current Project

I am still in the process of writing my support letter, getting shots scheduled and acquiring a new passport in prep for the Uganda trip. However, I am currently working on a project for JusticeACTS. (More will come on my involvement with them in the next few weeks)!

Current Projects:
Trafficking in Uganda, specifically Kampala. I am trying to get every detail I can from the states, a lot of what I am finding is heart wrenching. Those most susceptible to trafficking and modern day slavery are orphans... like those I will be working with in June. This world is so evil. This project is difficult on many levels. It is a fight to keep from emotional exhaustion with this project, but we need to help. We need to instigate the change. It starts with the grueling task before me.

If you have any contacts that you feel would be beneficial to my research on Uganda and their problem with human trafficking, send them my way!

My work in Uganda with Ukids is so close!! I can't wait to share love with all of them!

Where to begin...

Well, I am currently sitting in a local pub here in NE Portland while I try and figure out my life!

Uganda is fast approaching!!

I leave on June 15th for a month to live in Seeto, Uganda where my great team and I will be helping out in an orphanage. With approximately 1,000 orphans running around, we will most definitely be busy!!

I will be working alongside the mums of the orphanage and helping out with VBS as needed. The last week of the work trip will be in Lira, Uganda where we will be working with orphans who have been sadly effected by the war there. Child soldiers and that story is so heart breaking that I physically got sick when reading up on the details. Ugh, it's awful.

I am super excited to see how God will use me, I know I can be a huge blessing to the mums and orphans and I can't wait to see how it all unfolds.
